London schools face massive shortage of places

Up to 70,000 children in London will not have a school place over the next four years, says London Councils, an organisation that represents all 33 London boroughs. The shortage of school places in the capital, largely concentrated in primary schools, has become critical it says, and will start extending into secondary schools from the 2014/15 school year. Around 11,000 pupils in the capital are currently being taught in temporary classrooms because local authorities lack the funds to provide permanent school places. According to London Councils, £520 million is needed to ensure every pupil has a permanent place for the 2011/12 school year, but the government has so far allocated just £210 million.
