London transport chiefs have applauded the significant drop in sex offences related to London’s unlicensed minicabs as a result of the Safer Travel at Night initiative. There were 111 cab related sexual offences in 2010/11, a year on year drop of 20 per cent. The Safer Travel partnership between the mayor, Transport for London (TFL) and police has worked at reducing the number of sex attacks by raising awareness of the dangers of using unbooked minicabs, which are unlicensed and unregulated and can be linked to crimes such as rape, robbery, and drugs, say TFL chiefs. London’s mayor called the cabs, which tout illegally for business, “Russian roulette”. In the last 12 months there have been 1,300 arrests of drivers touting for business.
