7 December – 27 February 2011. On display for the first time in Europe, in collaboration with the Palace Museum in Beijing the V&A presents an exhibition of luxurious robes and accessories worn by the emperors and empresses of the last ruling dynasty of China, the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).
Costumes for rituals, celebrations, weddings, hunting trips and royal visits are on show as well as the complex rules regarding when and where to wear specific outfits.
Also displayed are robes, hats, shoes and children's clothes and the patterned fabrics created for the Empress Dowager Cixi and her court ladies.
