16 February - 21 August. Billed by the Tate Britain as the most ambitious exhibition about watercolour art ever to be staged, the enormous variety of works on show, spanning an incredible 800 years, certainly makes for a comprehensive show.
Perhaps more pertinently, in an age when installation and conceptual art appear to reign supreme, the gallery challenges preconceptions of watercolour art, written-off by many as at best out-moded and at worst a pastime of "Sunday painters". Comprising everything from miniature maps to expressive masterpieces, by artists from Turner to Emin, visitors are likely to be surprised at the important role the medium has played, and continues to play, in British art.
