Degas and the Ballet: Picturing Movement

17 September-11 December. The Royal Academy hosts a major exhibition consists of paintings, sculptures, pastels, drawings, prints and photographs by leading Impressionist figure Edgar Degas.

Comprising both celebrated and little-known works, highlights of the exhibition include the celebrated sculpture Little Dancer Aged Fourteen, which is displayed with a group of preparatory drawings; Dancer Posing for a Photograph; Dancer on Pointe; The Dance Lesson; Dancers in a Rehearsal Room with a Double Bass; and Three Dancers.

In addition to the dance theme, racehorses and bathing women were his principal subjects. Blindness forced Degas to cease painting in 1912 and he died in Paris five years later.
